I remember as a kid way back when, my mom telling me my mind was a terrible thing. See I was a very creative and outgoing sort of guy. If you look up the word “extrovert” you’ll see a notation that says “See Bill.”
Mom tried to keep me on the right track by always warning me that I could get myself into lots of trouble if I’d fill my mind with bad things. And so she kept insisting that I study hard, get good grades, go to the university and in her conclusion fill my mind with the good and right things.
Well after many years of living, and working in my career for over 41 years and earning my college degree in psychology and my master’s degree in theology and pursuing a PhD in metaphysics, I have to confess that mom was only partly right in her decrees about my mind.
Yes our minds need filing and there is something terribly sad about a person who has stopped choosing to learn and explore the vast universe of knowledge and experiences out there. But just filling your mind is only 1/3 of the truth about how you go about filing your life and achieving your dreams.
Our lives are made up of and we always get the results of what we Think, Feel and Do. Life boils down to our thoughts, our emotions and our actions. Put all three together and your will be unstoppable. There is a universal law called the Law of Attraction. This law is made up of the pursuit of all three of these things, think, feeling and acting.
The logical and most sensible place to begin our pursuit of our dreams is to first fill our minds. “It all begins upstairs”, as one armchair philosopher said when considering how one achieves their dreams and goals.
I especially like what Gail Goodwin said about living and growing. Her thoughts relate well to our mindsets, ““There are two kinds of people. One kind, you can just tell by looking at them at what point they congealed into their final selves. It might be a very nice self, but you know you can expect no more surprises from it. Whereas, the other kind keep moving, changing… They are fluid. They keep moving forward and making new trysts with life, and the motion of it keeps them young. In my opinion, they are the only people who are still alive. You must be constantly on your guard against congealing.”
So what are you filling your mind with today? Promise, possibility and opportunity, or some other more depressing and despairing sort of things? You get to choose. Don’t blame anyone else for what enters and rattles around inside of you.
I believe my mom had it right mostly. She knew that my mind was a terrible thing to waste and so she did her best to encourage me to fill it the right way. Thanks mom, your words filled my mind and made a positive difference on my life.
